Federal Skilled Worker

The Federal Skilled Worker program is designed for individuals seeking Canadian permanent residency who have at least one (1) year of continuous work experience at either the executive/managerial (Skill Level 0), professional (Skill Level A) or technical (Skill Level B) level.

 

Minimum requirements

To be eligible, you MUST meet ALL the following criteria.

 

1. OFFICIAL Language level

Meet the required language levels for each language ability of at least one of Canada's official languages, English or French, via an approved test.

Language tests results are valid for two (2) years after the date of the test result. 

Your test results must be valid on the day your immigration application is submitted.

 

2. SKILLED Work experience

Have within the ten (10) years before your application at least one (1) year of continuous full-time paid work experience (Canadian or foreign) in the same occupation at either Skill Level 0, A or B. 

 

This means you have earned 1,560 total hours of work.

* Any hours per week over 30 is not eligible; part-time workers can work more or less than 15 hours per week as long as it adds up to 1,560 hours within 2 years (104 weeks) before applying.

 

The work experience must have been in one or more executive/managerial (Skill Level 0), professional (Skill Level A) or technical (Skill Level B) jobs.

Professional jobs that usually call for a degree from a university, such as:

  • Engineer
  • Doctors
  • Dentists

Technical jobs and skilled trades that usually call for a college diploma or training as an apprentice, such as:

  • Chefs
  • Plumbers
  • Electricians

 

You must show that you performed the duties set out in the lead statement of the occupational description in the National Occupational Classification (NOC). This includes ALL the essential duties and MOST of the main duties listed in the NOC description.

 

The work must have been paid. You earned either a wage or commission. Volunteer work or unpaid internships do not count.

 

3. employment oFFER

There is no employment offer requirement under this class. However, having a valid full-time employment job offer in the same occupation as your skilled work experience improves your selection scoring under the Comprehensive Ranking System.

Job offer must:

  • Be in writing.
  • Be for at least 1 year in duration.
  • Not be from an embassy, high commission or consulate in Canada.
  • Include details of the work you will perform (the job duties).
  • Include your type of pay (commission, salary or hourly wage) and the amount.
  • Include any conditions of employment (e.g. hours of work, vacation, benefits).

 

4. Education

Show proof of at least your secondary (high school) education credential whether earned in Canada or in another country.

 

Having a valid post-secondary education credential improves your selection scoring under the Comprehensive Ranking System.

  • Completed credential (a certificate, diploma, or degree) from a recognized educational or training institution; AND
  • An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report performed by an independent designated company that evaluates your foreign education credential. This report is used to make sure that your foreign degree, diploma, certificate (or other proof of your credential) is valid and equal to a Canadian one.

 

5. Proof of funds

Show that you have enough money to support you and your family to settle in Canada in order to cover the costs of living in Canada during your permanent residency period.

You do not need to provide proof of funds in your application if you:

  • Are currently able to legally work in Canada; AND
  • Have a valid job offer from an employer in Canada

 

6. WHERE YOU CAN LIVE IN CANADA

Plan to live outside Québec. The province of Québec selects its own skilled workers.

7. ADMISSIBILITY

Be admissible to Canada. You and your family members must not be inadmissible to Canada for security, criminal or medical reasons.
